Coutume sourced this beautiful piece from Zapotec artisans in San Bartolo Coyotepec, in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The artisans fire the clay in a semi-underground oven for around 8 hours at 800 degrees Celsius, employing an oxygen-reduction technique. The smoke creates a distinct black and beige, slightly iridescent color on the surface.
Historically, this thin clay was primarily used for transporting liquids. Today, these pieces are also designed to serve as decorative items.
